    Smile two cycles/phases/periods/stages

Washing machines have two cycles: wash and rinse.

I doubt if I could replace cycles in the above sample with phases/periods/stages. if not, why not? Thanks.

    Re: two cycles/phases/periods/stages

They are two different processes, not stages/phases in one process.

When it comes to washing machines, I've never heard it referred to as anything other than "cycles."

Thanks, Barb, for the concise reply.
In the interests of truth, does two processes work in the base sentence now that you mentioned it?

Gosh, I've never thought about it. Like I said, "cycle" is so closely tied to "washing machine" that I can't think of why you'd want to use a different word. There's the spin cycle too. That's when it makes the wumpety-wumpety sound if your load isn't balanced.

    Thanks, Barb, for the reply.
I just want to try out every possible way to express the same concept. No hard feeling.
