Smile Holland's gardens explode with tulips

During the month of April, Holland's gardens explode with tulips of every color.

Does explode with in the above sample indicate are suddenly filled with?
As a small aside, rumor has it that tulips is a corruption of two lips. Is this rumor trustworthy? Thanks.

You could think of it that way. Explode with is a common phrase to describe something that suddenly appears everywhere.

As far as the origin of the word goes, I don't think you are correct

here is a website for you to check out

    History of Tulips

    I quote:

The Development of the Name "Tulip"

The most obvious explanation for how the tulip got its name was its resemblance to the headgear worn by many people in the Middle East, such as the Persians -- the turban, that was also written as "toliban". Changed into Latin, this became "tulipa". With a little imagination, the flowers of some tulips do look like a turban. The actual origin of the word is unknown.
Sorry to break your romantic bubble.
