    Smile beautiful to a fault

Mary is beautiful to a fault.
John is very clever to a fault.

What do the above two statements refer to? Thanks.

    Hi Angli,
...yes....very interesting question! "...to a fault" means "in the extreme", but why....that's another question!

    Thanks, moggy, for the reply.
By the way, are they often used in daily speech?

    Re: beautiful to a fault

Hi again Angli...Yes...fairly common, though it shouldn't be overused....like the word "love" for example, it describes an extreme, so even though you may hear it daily, it's not so very often you get to use it!
