    Wink Mississippis

I sometimes found people in TV series or movies would count Mississippis. There're various situations of this kind of actions that I can't easily recognise the meaning of saying " one Mississippi, two Mississippis, three Mississippis...". Can anyone help me, please?
In which situations do people count Mississippis? What's this for?
    Thanks a lot~

It takes about one second of time to say "one Mississippi".

So when they are counting Mississippi's they are counting seconds of time.

Counting steamboats or elephants serves the same purpose.
