"in a long catch of salmon"?

Hi... I don't understand the underlined part.. What does "in a long catch of salmon" means? And in this sentence, is "a large porpoise" a subject?

In a long catch of salmon dumped on the stone floor of a fish market was

a large porpoise, now gasping its life away.

    Thank you..

    Hi, Juliana!

I assume a 'long catch of salmon' would indicate many fish were caught.

Yes, 'porpoise' is the subject: A large porpoise, now gasping his life away, was part of a long catch of salmon that was dumped on the stone floor of a fish market.
