Who did you give it (to)?

    Hello Buddies,

thanks for your kindness and time.

    My question for tonight is:

Is the preposition to in the example below necessary or can it be left out?

Ex: # 1 Who did you give/send it (to)?
    # 2 Where're you going (to)?

Is there a rule to it?

    Thanks for help.

Who is the object of the preposition "to". Think of it this way....

    You gave it to who?

    # 2 Where're you going (to)?

Here you do not use a preposition. Where not a word that can be used as an object of a preposition.

    Where're you going? is correct.

Is there a rule to it?

    Thanks for help.

    Hello, Waawe,

In #1, 'to' cannot be deleted/left out. In #2, you have a choice of using it or dropping it. We OFTEN use a preposition in questions like this. It's reminiscent of friendly speech.
