    Make use of vs Use

I know they both can mean the same, but in some cases, can you use one & not the other?

Also, some students want to use them to say how they will travel. For example:

instead of saying, "I will go there by train," they want to say, "I want to use or make use of a train." I know that sounds strange, but I can`t explain why. Please help

1..."make use of" is a long-winded way of saying "use".
2..."will" and "want to" do not have the same meaning.
3...I presume you mean that they want to say 'I [will][want to] (use)(make use of) a train to go there.'
4...It sounds strange because we don't 'use trains'; we use things like hammers and pencils. Tell your students that, in English, we 'go places by trains' and 'take trains'.

Re: Make use of vs Use

Sometimes I say that I will use the train.

I don't think it sounds strange.
I wouldn't think twice about saying something along the lines of:
While I am here, I might as well make use of the train
Nor You depend on your car for every journey, why not use the train?
