    Possessions

    Can you please tell me on what occasions I can talk about or write about possessions without using the 's and say e.g. the father of the boy, or similar.

    It is permissible any time but to do it all the time would not sound or read well.

    You would certainly use this format in situations where it is awkward or misleading to use a normal "'s" construction.

    For example:

    This book is the property of the University of Manitoba.
