    what does mean the idiom " talk at cross purposes"?

    idiom means....
    phrase etc. established by usage and not i ediately co prehensible fro the words used. (e.g. over the oon, see the light) and for of expression peculiar to a language etc.

    "cross-purpose" = A usually unintentionally conflicting or contrary purpose.

    Each person in a discussion is in fact talking about a different thing.
