    "Legal formalities were continuing and the matter was still a while from court, he said." May I ask what "the matter was still a while" means?

    The "matter" is the legal problem.

    the matter was still a while from court means that the legal problem has not been formerly presented in the court. Still a while means that the matter will not be before the court in the near future. There are some legal formalities to be completed before the matter can go to trial.
