    Singular or plural?

    Is an apple as well as an orange considered to be healthy enough in a meal?
    The sentence above is right or not? Please explain your choice

    Yes, it is correct. "As well as" adds an extra element but does not increase the number of the true subject (apple).

    I think that "as well as" is the same as "and," which makes the sentence incorrect. Are an apple and orange....

    They are similiar in meaning but not in structure. "And" does increase the number, whereas "as well as" adds extra information (like a non-restrictive relative clause does) without altering the singular quality of the noun/subject.
