what does make out mean in here?

    Good evening,

I have just a question about a meaning of a Phrasal verb.
MAKE OUT, I was looking fot its meaning in here, but I don't know wich is the one that fits in this sentence:

"If it was in my sailor-mentality years, I might have attempted to, as they said in those years, 'make out,"

it's talking about a man who had lost a wallet in a car and he hadn't realized it, 55 years later they've fount it.

    thank you.

"Make out" means to kiss and cuddle on a date with a girl.
