    Question comma ?

In a quotation such as: "What is that?" Mark said.
would putting a comma after that question mark be appropriate? If so would it go in or out the quotation? Or is it fine as is?

I would put a comma, indicating a short pause, after the quotation mark.

    Re: comma ?

No comma. This is straight dialogue.

"John tells me that Mark asked him 'What is that?', and he was ashamed because he couldn't answer him".

Here the question is a quotation and a comma can be inserted.
