    In today's San Jose Mercury newspaper:

    They had operated on his head, and his stomach.

    Would you please explain the necessity of the comma?

    It might make sense if the stomach operation were seen as less important, otherwise it makes no sense. I wouldn't use it.

    It might make sense if the stomach operation were seen as less important, otherwise it makes no sense. I wouldn't use it.
