    Is the word are a verb? If not what is it?

    'are' is a form of the irregular verb 'to be'

    To be

    I am

    You are

    he/she/it is

    we are


    am/are/is are present tense forms.

    'Be' is also used as an auxiliary (helping) verb because it is also used to make tenses such as the present continuous ( We are going home.).
