    Smile because he understands the basics of cooking

    But a good chef can work without recipes because he understands the basic/s of cooking.




    Should I use the singular or plural form of basic/s in the above? Could it be replaced by "the basic principles/lessons?" Thanks.

    The title of the thread has it the right way, thus:
    A a good chef can work without recipes because he understands the basics of cooking.
    I suppose you could say "basic principles" instead of "basics", but why would you want to?
