Smile with the whirligig of time

This style of dress used to be in fashion at the turn of the century, but, with the whirligig of time, it had lost its popularity by about 1905.

Is the above sample well made, especially the underlined parts? If not, how would you reword them? Thanks.

"the whirligig of time"???? Are you serious? You would write like this? Angliholic, your writing is deteriorating lately by using such obscure literary terms.

    Thanks, Naamplao.

In my humble opinion, I know I'm not potent enough to write that sublime dazzling literary terms. You know my simple style of writing.
