It and they- the difference in usage ?

    Hi,

Could someone clarify the following please.

Sentence : " We imported ethnic indian skirts and blouses, and it/they became a craze In New York.

My question is : Should it be it or they? is there a difference in usage in a sentence like the one above?

We imported ethnic Indian skirts and blouses, and they became a craze In New York.

Here it is the "ethnic skirts and blouses" that have become a craze = plural items = they.

We have imported skirts and blouses in an Ethnic Indian style, and it became a craze in New York

Here it is the Ethnic style that has become a craze = singular = it

    Thank you Anglika,
In your last example above , the antecedent is "Ethnic Indian style?" Would I be wrong in saying :

"We imported skirts and blouses in an ethnic Indian style, and they became a craze in NY," if I was referring to " skirts and blouses" - the antecedent in this case.

    Could you clarify , please.

Re: It and they- a further question

I guess it referes to a style, so it would sound naturally to me if you might say 'it'.
