Can one use 2 instead of 1:
1-It was in this shop that I met her first.
2-It was in this shop where I met her first.

I'd go for something like 'This is the shop where I met her first' to avoid using 'in' with 'where', but I wouldn't say that sentence 2 is wrong.

Exactly what I thought Tdol .... something about 'where' as a relative pronoun not liking prepositions. .... Still the original sentence sounds ok. However, that may be because we are used to listening to English spoken incorrectly.

There are cases where the preposition would be wrong and 'which' would be used:
The town where I was born...
The town in which I was born
The town which I was born in...

That's why I would try to avoid it here, too.
