I would say after the person knows some of the basic verbs, like did.

(used to - (I) have done it, but (I) don't do it anymore.)

    Hi again!

You mean at the elementary level? Do you think it suits well for twelve-year old kids?

I think so. They have enough experience to understand used to. Everyone at that age has given up certain things in favor of other things they have become more interested in. Also, they would understand something like:
We used to visit my grandmother every once in a while. She died last year. Now we can't do that anymore.

    Re: used to

And, what about younger learners like ten years old? It depends of the learner's experience as you said, isn't it?

I think so. An individual four, five or six years old doesn't have enough experience to understand an expression like "used to" as well as somebody older. There is just not much of a past there.

I think a ten-year-old would understand an expression such as, "I used to play with dolls, but I have outgrown that."
