standing by the side of the road

    Hi again.
My students' dictionaries are quite vague on this issue so could you British English teachers out there help me , please?

Would you feel comfortable with both a) and b) or would you rather have just a) as grammatically correct and frequently used?

a)A man was on his way home when he saw a boy standing by the side of the road, looking terribly cold.
    or:
    b) He saw a boy standing on / at the left side of the road.

    Thanks a lot.

    Correct
    or:
    b) He saw a boy standing on the left hand side of the road.
Use only if the side of the road is important to mention.
To say, "...standing on the left side of the road." accentuates the side of the road even more.
