    susainability and survivability

In the following paragraph, what is the logical relation between sustainability and survivability? I asked this question because I feel that sustainability itself is also survivability. I don't see the need to to separate them two, or at least I don't see the point fro which the author sees it. Could someone throw light on this? Thanks.

"Working toward sustainability requires many different types of actions in different subject areas. In light of rapidly advancing technology, however, sustainability alone is not enough. We need to be concerned with survivability. There must be a move away from the untenable course we are on today toward a world where we learn to control the diverse forces we are unleashing."

To sustain something is to support/maintain something.

To survive something is to continue to live/exist

The sustainability of the environment means the possibility of continuing to maintain the viable environment.

We need to be concerned with survivability
= we [humanity] need to be concerned with being able to continue to live

Thank you again. I feel really indebted to you for all your answers, which are very hopeful. For this one, I think it's my own problem. I clearly know the meaning of the two words. My problem is I feel sustainability is part of survivability. But your explanation at least to some extent got me out of my own way of thinking.

You are to a degree right - man will not survive unless he sustains his world.
