The film Chocolat was a straingforward portrait of the double-bind that traps many Americans.
Would you please tell me "double-bind" in this sentence mean?
Simply stated, a double bind is an inescapable dilemma involving conflicting demands that allow no right or satisfactory response.
* A double bind occurs when a mother complains to her son for not giving her a kiss but recoils physically whenever the child does kiss her.
* A double bind occurs when a mother gives her son two different shirts as gifts for his birthday. He wears one of the shirts to his birthday party. His mother sees him and her first words to him are, "You didn't like the other shirt?"
* Women frequently find themselves in a double bind. If they stay at home with their kids they're regarded as non-achievers and if they go out to work, people say they're neglecting their family.
In essence, 'You're damned if you do...and damned if you don't'! There is no way you can succeed because whatever you decide to do, there will be bad results!
I hope this very simplistic answer will be helpful!
Madonna/Whore Dilemma is a sort of double-bind, isn't it?
