When using 'Today' do you use past or present tense?

For instance, - Today, Mary gets/got the book
Today, the old man sleeps/slept under the zinc.

Please let me know which you would choose.

    Re: Tenses

Yes, quite right. Today many things may happen and these can be related in the present or the past tense, depending upon the inference you wish to give to the listener.
