Form ever follows function.
It means that the application/use/purpose [function] of something will always govern its shape or design [form].
So a spade's shape is developed from the need to have a hard section to dig into the earth joined to a handle long enough for the user to stand when digging. Its form [shape] follows its function [to dig in the earth]
