    to follow in his footsteps

There would have been no dearth of roles for Tamil actor Rajinikant's daughter had she chosen to follow in his footsteps.

Instead Soundarya Rajinikant became a filmmaker and is now making Sultan - The Warrior, a 3-D animation project that features her superstar father in the role of an armour-clad warrior.

The emboldened sentence sounds strange to me. Could anyone explain it to me in a simple way?

If the daughter of the Tamil actor Rajinikant had decided to do what her father had done, there would have been no shortage of roles for her [as an actor].
