The expression is "a cat in heat". That means the female cat is receptive to the advances of male cats.

She's in season, or estrus. She is capable of getting pregnant at this time, and will make loud, screeching meowing noises in an effort to attract males. Cats who are spayed no longer go into heat.

When a female cat is in heat there is no doubt about what is going on.

That's the truth! Just last night I was working in my home office and heard what I thought was someone crying for help outside. The cries continued, so I stepped out onto my porch and saw that it was a cat (obviously in heat) caterwauling.

As Bob Barker used to say, please spay or neuter your pets!!
