a little / a few = used in a positive way in statements to suggest there is some of something.

I have a little money so I can lend you some.

    I have a few friends.

little / few = used in a negative fashion to suggest that there is almost none of something.

I have little money and what little I have I need so I can't lend you any.

    I have few friends.
