Question What's the meaning of "scrape my way throu..."?

I was translating the following article, and can't understand the meaning of
    "to scrape my way through"
Does it mean "pass the exam" or "try hard on stg"?

Could anyone teach me the meaning, pls?

The questioned sentence appears on the third paragraph of the following
BBC article,"Everything I needed to know I learned in McDonald's"
BBC NEWS | UK | Magazine | 'Everything I needed to know I learned in McDonald's'

    Thank you in advance.

Re: What's the meaning of "scrape my way throu..."?

It means to pass but not with a good mark. So say in an exam with a 60% pass mark a person who 'scraped throuugh' the exam would have scored 60% or possibly just a little higher say 63% for example.

In the context of the article, however, it could mean that the student has very little money on which to live and so has to work in order to continue studying.

Re: What's the meaning of "scrape my way throu..."?

In the context of the report, the person was not particularly good academically, and had great difficulty achieving the necessary level to get through his exams.

His employment by McDonald's taught him about all kinds of things, and gave him managerial responsibilities - training colleagues, stock-taking, cashing-up, even leading shifts with 20-30 colleagues, all at the age of 16. He also learned the value of hard work which he could apply to his studies at school and college.
