    I think both a and d will do but the answer is d

    They all have a similar meaning. c needs to be as a result of.
    The 'answer' may be D because that line begins with a CAPITAL letter which is needed at the begining of the sentence.

    . In fact, there is a prescription against that sort of "due to" - ignored by many (and not borne out in reality).

    But I don't think "because of" is ideal either. I'd expect to see just "At the jokes...".
