    pronoun questions...

    Hi,

I want to know the answers of the below questions...and the reasons.

    1. The Sahara, the largest of all deserts, has an area greater than (that/those) of the Unites States excluding Alaska.
    2. For many, the climate is similar to (that/those) of their native countries.

In question 1, I wonder what that/those stands for and in question 2, is it possible that climate has a plular form?

    Bes wishes...

    Singular area = singular pronoun

In Q1 that = the area. 'Those' would only be appropriate if the previous wording had been 'has areas'.
In your examples that and those replace and therefore save repeating earlier description(s).
Climate is like weather; both are all inclusive nouns.
