    Red face over time, they

***The soil in these places is so poor that the meat-eating plants doesn't have enough minerals to keep healthy. So these meat-eating plants have adapted over time by eating animals.***

    1) What does it mean of "over time" in the above sentence?

    __________________________________________________ ______________

    2) Can I use "they" as the plural of an animal, an insert and a book?

    Thanks.
