What does "in the final number" mean here?

    Dear teachers,

    Please read the following sentence:
The girls were dancing beautifully in the final number. In fact, they had been dancing well all evening.
What does "in the final number" mean here?
Does it mean the last dance? By the way, can I say "dance the last dance"?

    thanks
    yours

Re: What does "in the final number" mean here?

Presumably this is a stage show, so the girls have danced in several acts/numbers. This is the last number after which the show is finished.

You could say "danced the last dance".
