Why can't we write, "doesn't improves"

I know that this sentence is correct (first basic instincts, and then confirmed).

"Use it only if the situation doesn't improve"

Now someone asked me why can't it be "doesn't improves". I tried but I failed to come up with an answer in grammatical terms. It has got something to do with the tense, but I'm not just getting the right thing.

    Please assist :)

    Hi,
Perhaps because there is no verb '(to) improves'. (Not a teacher)
    Regards

When you place another verb before the main verb, you have to use the base form of the main verb. That other verb is usually an auxiliary verb and most often directly precedes the main verb.

    The situation (must)(will)(can) improve.
The situation usually (does)(doesn't) improve after just a few hours.
I, You, She, We, You, They (won't)(might) go there.
    We need (to go)(to sleep)(to eat)(to study).
