    SPORT IS

    SPORTS ARE

Peter, sorry I should have made myself clearer.

You can either say: sport is a part of my life, or sports are a part of my life. The latter would be used in a situation where you might enjoy more than one sport; the former as a generalization.

    Re: part

In the US, we would use only the plural form.

Sports are a big part of my life. Even if you play only one sport, the concept of "sports" takes the plural.
