Question It is up to you/It is down to you

    Hi,

Do it is down to you and it is up to you mean the same?
If not, would you please help me with their meanings?
    Thanks a lot

Re: It is up to you/It is down to you

"It is up to you" means the decision is to be made by you.

It is up to you to decide the color of the dress.

"It is down" is not anything I recognize.

"Get down!" is used for "Let's Party"

"It is down to you" is used in the same way as "it is up to you"

Re: It is up to you/It is down to you

"It is down to you" might be a shortened or corrupted version of "it [all] comes down to you". I agree with Susie. It's not a idiom I'm familiar with.

There's a Joni Mitchell tune, I think it's called, "Down to You", with that in the lyrics

    Everything comes and goes
Marked by lovers and styles of clothes
    Things that you held high
    And told yourself were true
Lost or changing as the days come down to you
    Down to you
    Constant stranger
    Youre a kind person
    Youre a cold person too
    Its down to you
It all comes down to you.

So do they (it's up to you vs. it all comes down to you) mean the same anyway? Slightly different? How, if so?

    I am a little confused.

Re: It is up to you/It is down to you

"It all comes down to you" means you - your actions - are the deciding factor.

Whether or not you succeed in school all comes down to you.

The game was tied, and it all came down to him.

Sussie: Whether or not you succeed in school all comes down to you.

The game was tied, and it all came down to him.
    In replace of "come down":

Whether or not you succeed in school it's all up to you. Likely?

The game was tied, and it was all up to him. I can see this one is not even close. But if we add to it a little bit: The game was tied, and it was all up to him to break it. Would that have worked?

This is my take on "it's up to you" and "it's down to you".
Of course they are similar in a way, but there also is a difference.

"it's up to you" is positive. You are the one who has the power/knowlege/privilege to decide or do something.

"it's down to you" is more negative, pessimistic, maybe even desperate. Some have tried to do something and failed. Others are unavailable, not willing, etc. You are the last hope, our last chance. Everything depends on you. It's down to you!
