    healthful, healthy, wholesome

    Dear teachers,

    I know that:

Wholesome food in a healthful climate makes a healthy man.

healthful = 1. conducive to good health of body or mind "a healthful climate"; "a healthful environment"; "healthful nutrition"; "healthful sleep"; "Dickens's relatively healthful exuberance", a healthful diet, healthful exercise
    2. free from filth and pathogens

healthy = 1. Having or indicating good health in body or mind; free from infirmity or disease

Healthy stresses the absence of disease and often implies energy and strength: The healthy athlete biked twenty miles every day.

a rosy healthy baby"; "staying fit and healthy", healthy climate, a healthy way of living

wholesome = conducive to or characteristic of physical or moral well-being

Wholesome suggests appealing healthiness and well-being: “Exercise develops wholesome appetites”

wholesome attitude"; "wholesome appearance"; "wholesome food", wholesome air, the food is quite wholesome

    healthful/healthy/wholesome climate (air)
    healthful/healthy/wholesome water

    wholesome advice
    wholesome friendship
    a healthful friendship (companionship)
    a healthy atmosphere
    a healthy influence

I felt much better, thinking of him at school, in company with boys of his own age and leading a busy, healthy live.
Max is a splendid officer -Sufficiently gallant, it appears, but not a helthy influence.

The distinction in meaning between healthy (“possessing good health”) and healthful (“conducive to good health”) was ascribed to the two terms only as late as the 1880s. This distinction, though tenaciously supported by some critics, is belied by citational evidence—healthy has been used to mean “healthful” since the 16th century. Use of healthy in this sense is to be found in the works of many distinguished writers, with this example from John Locke being typical: “Gardening . . . and working in wood, are fit and healthy recreations for a man of study or business.” Therefore, both healthy and healthful are correct in these contexts: a healthy climate, a healthful climate; a healthful diet, a healthy diet.

Would you be kind enough tell to me how could a man sort out such a muddle?

Thank you in advance for your efforts,

Look at the words that these adjectives describe to get the true meaning.

healthful climate = living einvironment free of toxins, air and water pollution. fresh air
