    Hi

If someone asks me: What do you do for a living?
Can I reply: I live from my work.

When someone asks "What do you do for a living?" they want to know what kind of work you do.

    You can say:

I work for the XYZ Company.

I am self-employed as an artist.

I am in partnership with Mr. X and we manufacture cars.

    or . . .

I am not employed at this time.

    Hi

Actually I wanted to know something else.

For example there is someone who tells me: I'm selling newspapers.
I tell him with disbelief then: Are you trying to tell me that you live from selling newspapers. Is it OK to say so? Hope you understand :)

    Is is OK to ask?

Yes, it is OK to ask, "Is that how you make your living?"

(Selling newspaper can be very profitable! )

    Hi again.

So now I know that I can ask: Is that how you make your living?
However, is it also OK to ask the way I asked it in my sentence, i.e.:
Are you trying to tell me that you live from selling newspapers?

By the way: I know that selling newspapers can be very profitable

you can now ask the following questions.

Are you trying to tell me that you make a living from selling newspapers?

......that you can make a living selling newspapers?

.......that you sell newspapers for a living?
