can u please tell me what line means here. Is it written lines?

Experience generally has shown that a letter costing two cents gets no more attention thana one-cent letter, and that fine stationery gets no more attention than poor-quality stationery. Thewhole appeal - and thus the relative success - lies in the copy material.
As a matter of fact, it has been shown that fine stationery and pamphlets actually lessen theeffect. They indicate an effort to sell on lines other than merit. This tendency has the same effect insales letters as it does in ads.

    Re: line

"line" here = a way of dealing with or thinking about something or someone

The police are following a new line in their investigations.
There are now new lines of thinking in the government's deliberations.
We follow different lines in our marketing approaches.
