Smile with Chinese design for the interior

They kept the house's original grace and beauty on the outside, but they combined modern Western conveniences with traditional Chinese design for the interior.

    Hi,
For a start, is it correct to say "on the interior" instead of "for the interior?" If not, what does "for" mean?
Second, is conveniences in the above interchangeable with appliances? Thanks.

No it's not. "on the inside" is OK but "on" doesn't work with interior because it has no "surface". "-side" has a surface so something can be put "on" it. "for" is difficult to explain but maybe if you think of it here as "as regards", it will help.

"Second, is conveniences in the above interchangeable with appliances? "

Not necessarily it could be talking about cupboards worksurfaces etc. too.
