    Smile which one is better

Could you tell which of the following two sentences sounds better, if any:

    1. At the beginning of 11th century (1018) after nearly half a century war the Bulgarian state surrendered to Byzantine rule.

    2. At the begginning of 11th century (1018), after a war that lasted for half a century, Bulgaria fell under Byzantine domination.

Both are fine [with minor amendments]. I marginally prefer #1

Frankly, both are good, but the second is phrased more as one would find in a history book. It would be my choice.
