    Help For A Sentence

    O'Brien was an Irishman ,with a kind of chastity even in his sins;and his gorge rose against that great brutalityof the intellect which belongs only to France

    What does "gorge rose " mean here ?

    It is an idiom meaning that you are disgusted by something.

    If comes from the sensation of the oesophagus and diaphragm contracting when you are about to vomit [sorry! ]

    You are aware, that "gorge rose" is not like "briar rose" or any such species of the flower. 'rose' here is the past tense of the verb 'rise'.
    Just for clarity, for other readers of this post.
