    The sentence is incorrect: "The way I am" is correct.

    "That is the way I am" = you must accept that the way I speak/talk/think/do things is how I do that.

    If you have met the other sentence somewhere, can you give the full context?

    There's a popular song by Timbaland right now called "The way I are." It's an artistic phrase that isn't proper English. That song is the only place I've ever heard it. In the song, it means "Can you handle me the way I am?" He's asking whether she can accept him without the money and the car and the other things he mentions earlier in the song.
