I need authentic defenition of the following terms with the sources of each definition (name of book or article + author's name):
1. Ommission (zero-translation)
Both terms are used in the field of translation.
Both terms point out to cultural issues :
Addition means adding anything that is needed such as a word or a clause in order to make the translated text natural in the target language.
Omission : a tricky device for translators ! occurs when a term is not translated . It may be so later on ; Proper names are mainly concerned. The name is omitted and the sense is transfered by other means ( common nouns).
This phenomenon is akin to allusion. In translations, either proper names are taken over unchanged from the source text to the target text or they can be adopted to conform the phonic/graphic conventions of the target T.
For instance,The Characters' names in Harry Potter were transformed from English into French .
REF : LEPPIHALME ( 1997) Cultural bumps: an empirical approach to the translation of allusions.
