    "Where's this" v "What's this"

In spoken English, which of these two sentences do you think is correct?

    Where's this? It's Buckingham Palace.

    What's this? It's Buckingham Palace?

With "where's this", doesn't this suggest that we are looking for the location of an object rather than its name?

I wouldn't argue with that. However, I'm pretty certain most people would say 'Where's this?' The context would almost certainly be looking at photos so perhaps it's a shortened for of 'Where was this taken?"
