    I learned that it came down to syllables.

    One syllable

    tall - taller
    big - bigger

    Two syllable ending with 'y'

    heavy - heavier
    friendly - friendlier

    Two syllables not ending with 'y'

    mature - more mature
    modern - more modern

    Three or more syllables

    beautiful -more beautiful
    amazing - more amazing
