The lord had the gardener plant trees to get shade. [shadow]

If I'm following your question right, Unr, you want 'plant', and yes, a 'to' is needed and you probably want the word 'shade' instead of 'shadow'.

    The structure is

Somebody had somebody do something to get something/to get something done.

The lord had the gardener plant trees in order to have shade.

The lord ordered trees to be planted so they could give shade.

The gardener planted trees for the lord who wanted shade in the garden.
