    1. A new age began when man first stepped onto the moon.

    2. He began eating as soon as the clock struck twelve.

Is this correct: In #1, the verb "began" is intransitive and is being modified by an adverbial phrase, while in #2, the verb "began" is transitive and "eating" is its direct object?

    Thank you.

    Re: Began

Correct. In sentence #2 the gerund is the direct object.
