    "the"

    Article “the”

    My teacher was explaining how to start a speech. She explained several ways to begin a speech. She stated ask a rhetorical question or ask an actual question for audience participation. Isn’t “the” supposed to go before audience?

    No, it's "audience participation," and audience is acting as the adjective.

    If it said "for the audience to participate" you would need the article.

    There are some other little oddities in that sentence though.

    Both of you are right as we do not know what is really meant here. If the speaker means just audience as a group of people then "the" is important here. If it is about audience participation though then we lshould eave the article.

    Both of you are right as we do not know what is really meant here. If the speaker means just audience as a group of people then "the" is important here. If it is about audience participation though then we should leave the article.
