    First vs. Firstly

    Dear Teacher,

Could you please tell me the proper usage of " first" and " firstly". For example, I start an essay, and I try to state my contentions. Which one I should use?

    Thanks in advance!

    Re: First vs. Firstly

"Three main reasons have been put forward to explain global warming. Firstly, the release of carbon...., secondly, the emissions from..., and thirdly,...."

    or
First, the release of carbon...., second, the emissions from..., and third,....

The important thing is not to mix them.

    I prefer 'firstly' etc.
